As Wikipedia goes dark for a day and Google displays a taped over doodle, the Joomla! Project supports the protest against the two U.S. bills aimed at combating online piracy and copyright infringement, providing a short statement and brief information on their website regarding SOPA and PIPA, the two bills under scrutiny. The Joomla! Project joins organizations such as the Free Software Foundation, Mozilla, Wordpress and Amnesty International in making public their concern over the possible impact of these bills worldwide.

While they are careful to express their support and respect for "legitimate Intellectual Property rights," the Joomla! Project notes that PIPA in particular is fraught with legal uncertainty and in regards to both bills in general they state that, "many feel that it will inevitably become a mandate for formalized Internet censorship, with an impact that goes far beyond the borders of any single country."

The two bills are now working their way through Congress, SOPA in the House of Representatives and PIPA in the Senate. Over 7,000 websites are said to be taking part in the massive protest on Wednesday, January 18.
