Joomla 2.5.6 Fixes Several Issues with Version 2.5.5

The Joomla! Project has announced the immediate availability of Joomla version 2.5.6, one day after the previous release 2.5.5. Twelve issues were discovered and fixed in 2.5.5 including several that resulted in fatal errors of some kind.

Joomla! 2.5.5 Release Available Today

The Joomla! Project has announced the availability of the security release version 2.5.5. While this is classified as a security release, there are also 11 new features added and 113 tracker issues fixed.

We've been hearing about Joomla 3.0 for some time already. In fact, we've already written about the updated UI plans here on Joomlanews.net. In a recent Joomla! Community Portal blog post, Mark Dexter reiterates the fact that "Version 3.0 is coming!"

New Joomla Leadership Structure Proposed

In a Joomla! Community Portal blog post, Paul Orwig reported on the Joint Leadership Summit held in San Jose, California. In the post he commented that, "it was widely felt that making some changes to our project's leadership structure can strengthen communication and collaboration between teams, as well as improve oversight and accountability for all contributors and teams."

Joomla! Project Informs Community with New Events Site

The latest Joomla property to be released is called The Joomla! Events Site. This new website will be used to announce and report on Joomla events around the world. With this addition, the Joomla community will be able to more easily get information about Joomla!Day events, User Group meetings, conferences and more.

May 2012 Issue of Joomla Community Magazine Out Now

Joomla.org launches Joomla Events Site

A new section of Joomla.org dedicated to presenting local and worldwide events to the Joomla community has been launched. The new site will be used to convey information such as Joomla! Days, Joomla! Conferences and Joomla! User Group meetings.

Joomla.org Announces More than 30 Million Downloads of Joomla Core Code

Last week an announcement on Joomla.org stated that the core Joomla files had been downloaded from its site more than 30 million times. It was also stated that, "Joomla now averages around 1 million downloads every month."

Joomla! Accepted as Mentoring Organization for Google Summer of Code

Even after a very late start, the Joomla! Project managed to push through their application and be approved for the 2012 Google Summer of Code program. Out of 406 applications submitted, Joomla! was one of 180 open source projects chosen to participate this year.

Joomla! Project Aims for Google's Summer of Code

The Joomla! Project has posted an official call for contributors for their push to be a part of the GSoC, or Google Summer of Code.

Google describes the Summer of Code as, "a global program that offers post-secondary student developers ages 18 and older stipends to write code for various open source software projects." The Joomla! Project is hoping to be included in this list.

Joomla 2.5.2 Security Update Released

Joomla 2.5.2 UpdateThe Joomla! Project has announced the immediate availability of a new version update, Joomla 2.5.2. This update comes roughly six weeks after the release of 2.5.0, and over one month after 2.5.1.

While the full package is available for download, the one click update procedure from the back end Administrator is the recommended method for updating your Joomla website.

Joomla! Project Releases Security Update for Joomla 1.7

Joomla Version 1.7.5For Joomla users who are still running websites on version 1.7 and are not planning to upgrade to 2.5, the Joomla! Project has released version 1.7.5 in order to patch an Information Disclosure exploit.

Users are urged to upgrade to version 2.5 as soon as possible as Joomla 1.7 will reach end of life on February 24, 2012.

This release was accompanied by much anticipation by the Joomla community as well as some confusion over the new release schedule. The important point to note is that the Joomla! Project is stressing that version 2.5 "is a long-term-support (LTS) release that will be supported for at least 18 months."
